The exhibition aims at tracing out the development of the Bulgarian decorative textiles during the 20th century. At the very beginning of the period the manufacture of textile was still a folk craft of centuries-old traditions. Gradually it evolved into an art of its own, which captured the sensitivity of the contemporary artists with its specific means of expression. We can speak of a professional artistic school only as late as during the last four decades of the 20-th century, when Marin Varbanov had set up the department at the Academy of Fine Arts. A number of young talents were taught there.
The exhibition is a retrospective. Presented against the background of sample works, created in different ethnographic regions during the 18th and 19th centuries, will be works of more than 260 contemporary artists. Among them Professor Marin Varbanov, Mara Yossifova et al., who are no longer with us. Several generations of Bulgarian textile artists will be represented, some of them residing abroad, as well as academy students and pupils from the secondary professional schools.
Included in the exhibition calendar will be viewings of museum films and lectures on the problems of the contemporary textiles.
